Lecture Overview:

Scientific inference, tests and testing and decision-making are generally about reasoning under conditions of uncertainty with probabilities. Even the most seasoned clinicians do not reason well with conditional probabilities. This will be readily demonstrated that even in the simplest of cases that we (including myself), resort to cognitive shortcuts and heuristics, or reduce the problem at hand to dichotomous either/or choices and employ Classical logic. This presentation will review differences between deductive and inductive inference which will be seen to align with the distinctions between probability and likelihood. Specific language will clarify for the clinician the direction of thought and introduce the appropriate uncertainty in the ensuing inferences.

Objectives

Recognize the differences between deductive and inductive inference * Understand the distinction between probability vs. likelihood * Understand roles of prior probability and likelihood in outcome

What attendees can expect to learn:

Recognize the differences between deductive and inductive inference * Understand the distinction between probability vs. likelihood * Understand roles of prior probability and likelihood in outcome
